Customer experience volunteer question?

"We seek employees with diverse experiences and perspectives to give us the ability to create memorable customer shopping experiences. Please describe a life experience (such as volunteering, traveling, etc.) that would add value to customer experience."

Borders asks that. But- what does it mean? Do you describe the time you climbed K-2 or describe someone who helped you while you were stuck in the Amazon? Or how you assisted a family of starving Kenyans or something?

So, ideas?
Even better- I’ve got 120 characters to answer it in.

I’m not looking for an answer, just an example. I’ve got a lot of volunteer work experience- I just don’t understand this question unfortunately.

Thanks!

Their customers are from many different areas of life looking for different things.  Anything that helps you relate to a different group of people should be mentioned.  For example, I speak sign language, spent time in the military, and have 4 sons.  I can relate to people who are deaf, have military experience, or parents.  If you speak Spanish and have experience with the Hispanic community, or you grew up working on classic cars with your Dad, or whatever gives you insight on a group of people, mention it here.
Good luck.

Well, if you’ve been to the Amazon or Kenya or climbed K-2, it would show some worldly experience, but I wouldn’t fret about that too much since most other applicants won’t have that on their apps either.

Think of answering the question in terms of what THEY want to hear. They’d like a diversied group of employees who can provide expertise to customers. So, if you are into animals, or travel, or cooking, or yoga, or write music… Whatever. Pick some experience that would sound good to them, as far as having knowledge about a specific subject that might also (coincidentally) be a section of books in the store.

Remember that they may be judging your writing skills as well, so be careful with grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

    Good luck!

Borders is a book store. So what life experience have you had that would help you sell books, CD’s, etc.?

For me, I would talk about volunteering as a Girl Scout troop leader and all the things the troop did, especially travel to Disney World, so I could share with customers how we planned our trip to Disney World using guide books we bought at Borders.
