Most people think of marketing as only promotion; they only see the tip of the marketing iceberg. However, marketing is much more. Recently AMA redefined what marketing is. Their new definition is as follows:
“Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”

Do you agree or disagree with this definition? Is marketing more than only promotion? Why? Do you think marketing creates value for society? How?

To me, marketing is all processes from creation of a good to consumption of that good by consumers. That is why marketing is so valuable. Without it, consumers would not receive and goods or receive them in poor quality at a high price. Marketing is what makes companies operate efficiently. Without marketing, few companies would grow or even survive. While all departments and people that work for a company are equally important to its success, marketing is what drives companies to be their best and at the same time, provide the best goods and services for consumers. This makes marketing much more than promotion. If you ask anyone in “marketing” they will surely tell you they do much more than promotion. If someone is only in promotion they say they are in advertising. This is why promotion is only a small part of a true marketers job and why they are valuable to society as well as vital to the success of a company.
